Chicago, Schuba's

Has it really been so long since we've played a show? Since New Year's Eve?

This was our first show as a Chicago band, now with Tim living there and of course Andy's lived there for years now. Matt Kadane came out from Boston to play keyboards and as an excuse to visit - basically the same as me, except I was playing drums. I flew out of Seattle on the hottest day of the year so far, a beautiful sunny day, a bicycle riding day, & got to Chicago for six days of murk. But it was a good trip: each meal was someplace new, and at each meal I stuffed myself silly with new food, usually good food, great Italian the last night, and other nights & days lots of others. And I got plowed! I drank and drank on Saturday night at Tim and Vickie's housewarming party, drank and drank like a fool, felt like a fool. Drinking is always embarrassing, even when nothing you do is bad it's still awkward. Never get drunk! Do you hear me? Do not get drunk! I wound up having stand-up slap-fights in the kitchen with two women I barely knew & getting slaughtered at it, playing old man card games with Matt for hours, & we all played some party game which I can only slightly remember, it's a blur, it's all such a blur. And on Sunday morning I woke with a thickness in my head which is only today starting to evaporate.

At any rate, we did play a show at Schuba's. Schuba's is a nice spot, a deep room with wood floors and a proscenium stage, right? Proscenium? and a bar that's separate from the music room so the yackers are tucked away somewhere. And the show - was it good? Did it go okay? I think it did, people said it was good. Some people said it was very good, but who can you believe these days? We played a couple of new songs which will come together, believe me - right now they're sort of train wrecks, but they'll come together. Matt played his piano & it was charming; we played Eff & that was truly a trainwreck, which we jumped off about 3/4 through the song; the Muskegons bought me a lemon drop, where the lemony booze comes in a shot & you suck a lemon after you shoot it - oh, that was festive. We'd had turkey & gravy for dinner and I had this chunky pudding that I actually liked quite a bit....

It's all food these days, it's all food. After that trip to Italy it's even more about the food than before. Soon this site will be dedicated to food, people will write in to the message board asking for pasta recipes rather than what microphones we use. Perfectly acceptable to me!
