any plans for West Coast shows?

Pat, we'll make it out there at some point, I reckon.

Some kind of unusual offer would make it happen sooner rather than later. But it will happen eventually.

what year V-4s do you have? I finally made our bassist buy a V-4, and it's an early 70s model (?) i think. Any difference between the years?

I have early 70s ones. They both have silver grille cloth with black and white logo plate.

I used to have an old one from the 60s, but I sold it.

There are minor differences....I cannot recall what they are right now. Would have to look at a schematic. But I think well-set-up V4s sound similar regardless of vintage, really.

Also, when you guys record bass, how do you do it?

I haven't recorded much bass direct--very little in fact. It's not bad to do if you want a particular sound, but I don't generally go for that sound.

Beyer M380 is THE mic for low end off a bass cabinet. I think it is similar to the TGX50--Bob Weston uses a TGX50 on his bass live, I believe. But I've only ever used the M380.

ElectroVoice RE20 has a good, more even sound as well. D112 works in a pinch, but it has a top-end peak that I'm not overly into. M88 sounds good on bass in addition to most everything else.

If you have significant top end you want on tape as well, I would run a condenser mic along w/the M380. Most of them will work all right, but it's easiest to use a small-diaphragm mic like a Shure KSM137/141 or an Earthworks or something.

Rule of thumb would be dynamic mic for low end, condenser for high end. If all else is impossible, that will get most of the way there.

I like to mic the room as well, sometimes. Any condenser will do the trick.

Generally, we use a little bit of limiting to tape, just to get good levels and tack down the peaks a little bit. It doesn't usually contribute to the sound.
