RE: semi-official word on michael
what a sad, sad day.
it’s not often that i feel so strongly affected by the loss of someone i didn’t personally know, and it reflects the force of michael’s personality as i glimpsed it: through his elegant, classy drumming; his refreshingly unironic and often hilarious journal entries that brightened so many otherwise mind-numbing days at work; his obvious lust for life.
a few years ago one of my closest friends and i saw silkworm at the crocodile, one of the last seattle shows before everyone relocated. it so happened that a girl whom my friend had known in high school was sitting at a table talking with michael and some other folks, and we immediately began cracking up, speculating on whether she would make it into the next day’s journal entry. sure enough, there was a reference to an attractive woman who had been at the show that night. (turned out upon further inquiry that it was a different person, but that just made it even more amusing.)
i don’t know, maybe it’s somehow trivializing to honor a person for the impression he made on the lives of more-or-less total strangers. but actually, i think maybe not, you know?
i can only imagine how hard this is for everyone who was close to him. my heart goes out to you all.
