RE: semi-official word on michael
I am so incredibly saddened by this news. I've probably seen 15 Silkworm shows over the years, and more than a few times shared a drink and some friendly words with Michael.
Things I remember about Michael:
- At my first Silkworm show (in Boston), they were one of two opening acts. By the time I got to the show, a band was playing, but I didn't know if Silkworm was coming on after them or they had already played. I went back to the Silkworm merch table and asked a person - who turned out to be Michael - whether Silkworm had played. When he told me that they had, I was visibly upset, and Michael introduced himself, introduced me to Andy and Tim, and gave me a SKWM t-shirt (the classic red logo with the star).
- Once my wife and I made a road trip to see Silkworm in Providence where they played in some odd venue filled with frat boys who all left after the opening act. They played a great set for the 10 or 20 people left in the audience anyway and later I had a long drunken talk with Michael. This was somewhat unusual because Michael was usually busy looking for girls after they played (God bless his rock-n-roll soul).
- I was out in Seattle for business and popped up to Vancouver to see them play with Seam. Michael recognized me and asked me what in the hell I was doing in Vancouver.
- The last time I saw them was last November in New York. When they played "His Mark Replies", Michael borrowed one of Andy's guitars to play from his drum stool. Shirtless and in shorts behind his drums with the guitar in his lap, he looked naked and was having a great time. Pics from that show are here:
