SETTING: RICHMOND - Suburb of Vancouver, built on sand, home of YVR. Local population is largely oriental. HOME DEPOT - Home improvement warehouse. Orange.
SOUNDTRACK: SILKWORM - One of them albums.
PLOT: So me and my pal Snik are cruising into Richmond. We're in his truck blasting the hot Silkworm tracks. He's asked me to help him with a countertop. He says, "Your job will be to put silicone in the joints of the mould." He's out of black silicone, so we have to go get some at Home Depot.
Home Depot. High ceilings. Busy afternoon.
We're still cruising, this time up and down the aisles, looking for the silicone. Snik's ahead of me. The job calls for a regular finish. I wonder. It's noisy—kids screaming, forks lifting—so I yell at the top of my lungs (I'm kind of a shrimp, so that's less than 5'), "HEY, SNIK. WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT BLACK CAULK?"
Snik doesn't respond. He says, "Uh...."
I look up. The only black man in the entire city is standing next to me.
